1. What are porcelain veneers?

Veneers are thin, permanent custom-made covers which are placed over the front surface of teeth for cosmetic purposes.

The most common material of choice for veneers is Porcelain. Porcelain is a type of ceramic and it is a strong, stain-resistant, tooth-coloured material which can be made to mimic the colour and natural translucency of a natural tooth. Porcelain veneers and ceramic veneers of often used interchangeably.

2. Why would I want veneers?

Veneers are a great solution if you are unhappy with the shape, size, and colour of your natural teeth.
Veneers can improve:

  • small “black triangle” gaps between teeth
  • slight crookedness
  • unevenly sized teeth
  • chips
  • crack lines
  • colour
  • highly stain-prone teeth

3. How do veneers work?

Veneers are either placed directly onto natural teeth, or more commonly, replace a thin layer of natural enamel on the front surface and wrap around the sides of the tooth.

This method of trimming the enamel provides extra strength and support, so the veneer can grip perfectly to the tooth.

4. What is the procedure for porcelain veneers?

The procedure will start with a consultation from your dentist, where the advantages and disadvantages will be explained, and your treatment expectations can be discussed.

Next is the preparation stage, in which the surface layer of enamel is shaved, impressions of your mouth are taken, and the desired shape and colour are chosen.

The final stage is when the bespoke veneers are checked for a snug fit, natural-looking shape, and colour. If you are happy to proceed, the veneers are then set into place with dental adhesives.

5. What are the advantages and disadvantages of porcelain veneers?

Advantages

  • Natural Finish
  • Will not stain
  • Does not chip easily
  • Can cover up a variety of cosmetic concerns
  • Can improve the appearance of slightly crooked teeth without the need for braces
  • Lasts for up to 10-15 years with correct maintenance

Disadvantages

  • Often requires the irreversible removal of natural tooth structure
  • Need to be replaced if they fall off or become ill-fitting
  • Decay on teeth must be fixed before veneers can be prepared
  • Not a substitute for crowns
  • Expense

6. How long do porcelain veneers last?

Veneers last on average 8-15 years but can last up to 30 years if they are properly maintained.

To maximise the lifespan of veneers, you should:

  • Brush twice daily with a soft brush
  • Clean between the teeth with floss and/or interdental brushes
  • Do not bite your nails, chew on pens, open packets or cut cello tape with your teeth
  • Prevent biting down or ripping hard foods with your front teeth e.g., nuts, crusty baguettes/breads, pork crackling, hard sweets
  • Visit your dentist every 6-months for a check-up and clean, to ensure your oral health and veneers are stable

7. How much do veneers cost?

Porcelain veneers are an expensive cosmetic procedure due to the type of material and the natural-looking design which is hand crafted by dental technicians.

Dental insurance may contribute to the cost of veneers, depending on your level of cover.

Porcelain Veneer prices vary between dental surgeries. It is best to book a consultation with your dentist and together create a treatment plan which achieves your desired outcome and go from there!
